We sit down with legendary University of California-Berkeley Rugby Coach Jack Clark. Clark has been the head coach for the Golden Bears for 33 years, in which they’ve won 23 National Championships. He shares with us the foundation of their success, their team culture. Cal’s Team Culture is built on several axioms that they live on a daily basis the foundation of which is Grateful for Everything, Entitled to Nothing (2:10). The value system they have established help inform all of their decisions (5:35) and some of those values include Loving Conditionally (6:50), Team First, Self Last (9:30), Creating a Shared Vocabulary (11:50) and Expecting Everyone to Lead (15:52). He shares with us some of his favorite resources to learn about leadership (20:20) and we are truly grateful that this icon took the time to talk with us.

Done well, the Sumo Deadlift is an expression of mobility, strength and technique, an expression so effective in fact, that it’ll make people on the internet accuse you of cheating. Check out our Pillars of Sumo Deadlift series and have keyboard warriors everywhere hating on your huge pull.

The Stance

Finding your best stance is the first step to a successful sumo deadlift. Too narrow and you aren’t maximizing your leverages, too wide and you may not be able to effectively generate power. Watch this and find the stance that’s right for you:

The Set-Up

Finding your most effective position to load your hips and legs, while maintaining the best back angle throughout the start is key to a successful start in the Sumo Deadlift:

Tightness in the Start

To pull big weights, you have to get tight. Generating tension through the lats, lumbar spine and abs is critical to success in the Sumo Deadlift:

Patience off the Floor

A well executed Sumo Deadlift relies nearly as much on timing as it does on strength. Being patient off the floor to allow the body to generate tension in key to maintaining optimal positions:

The Lockout

A good lockout is the culmination of a well-done Sumo Deadlift. Proper timing and sequencing of the legs and hips will make for a smooth lockout.

Understanding the principles upon which effective Weightlifting Programming is built is critical to being able to create strategies to help athletes improve their strength, technique, speed and performance in the lifts. To help you achieve this goal, we have put our popular video series Scientific Principles of Weightlifting all in 1 place for you, watch and learn.

Specificity

The first and most important principle, Specificity, creates a framework within which all other programming decisions are made.

Overload

For training to be effective it must be challenging enough to drive adaptation. Max Aita explains the Principle of Overload and gives parameters for volume and intensity to help inform your weightlifting training.

Fatigue Management

Hard training is important but if you can’t recover effectively, your progress will be short lived. The Principle of Fatigue Management helps you decide how much training is enough, when deloads are appropriate and other ways to make sure that recovery is optimal.

Stimulus Recovery Adaptation

The Principle of SRA will give you a better understanding of how frequently to train your lifts and the different implications on fatigue that training for technique, speed and strength have.

Variation

The Principle of Variation is critical to understand so that you can apply enough variation to training to avoid staleness and overuse injury, but not so much that you disrupt directed adaptation.

Phase Potentiation

Strategically sequencing different phases of training will help you maximize your long term training results and ensure that you are best peaked for the most important competition days.

Individual Differences

Being able to adjust training loads, exercise selection, frequency and other factors based on an individual differences between lifters or for the same lifter at different stages of their career, is the final piece to mastering program design.
